New Hampshire's official state emblem is the world-famous "Old Man of the Mountain," adopted in 1945 (along with the state motto of "Live Free or Die") as World war II approached its end. The Old Man of the Mountain is also the title of one of New Hampshire's state songs and appears on the New Hampshire state quarter:
New Hampshire became the 9th state in 1788 (see STATEHOOD ORDER).
